Life-Sentenced Palestinian Refugee Pronounced Dead in Latakia Prison

Palestinian refugee Ahmad Abdullah Balbisi died in Latakia central prison, where he has been locked up for over eight years on account of his involvement in peaceful protests against the Syrian government.

Ahmad, formerly sheltered in AlAyedeen Camp in Hama, reportedly quarreled with prisoners affiliated with the Syrian government in Latakia jail and had been violently beaten up. He allegedly committed suicide shortly afterwards.

Activists firmly refuted the above version and held the Syrian prison authorities responsible for Ahmad’s killing.

Sources close to the victim said he was killed by pro-government prison wardens owing to his support for the uprisings against the incumbent authorities.

Ahmad was kidnapped by Syria’s security forces on September 8, 2011 and jailed for eight months to Sednaya military prison, before he was transferred to the central prison in Hama. In 2016, he was moved to Latakia jail after he had received a life-sentence.
