Authorities Okay Reconstruction of Yarmouk School

The education chief in Yarmouk Camp, Walid AlKurdi, said the Syrian government has signaled the go-ahead for the reconstruction of a UNRWA school in the camp.

According to AlKurdi, the move aims at opening up classes for students who walk for long distances every day to reach their schools in AlZahira neighborhood, located outside of the camp.

Sometime earlier, Palestinian children taking shelter in Yarmouk Camp have appealed to UNRWA and the General Authority for Palestinian Refugees to work on reconstructing their destroyed schools so as to enable them to pursue their studies.

Parents also called for opening up the local school, recruiting qualified teaching staff, and securing transportation means back to and from the camp.

Available data by UNRWA indicates that 32 UNRWA facilities have been reduced to rubble in Yarmouk Camp, including 16 schools.

Several UNRWA facilities were destroyed in the Syrian warfare and others have gone out of operation, including two clinics, a vocational training center, a youth development center, and 28 schools, out of 112 UNRWA schools in Syria.
