UNRWA said it will provide treatment costs for Palestinian child Bayan Taha Khatab, who suffers from congenital cataracts.
The child was reportedly transferred to Intralasik International Center of Ophthalmology in Damascus to carry out medical checks, pending an eye surgery.
Bayan, who grew up in Syria’s Khan Dannun refugee camp, in Rif Dimashq, suffers from an eye disease known as the cataract, a type of clouding that affects the eye’s natural lenses and may cause vision loss.
Sometime earlier, her family said they have failed to secure the required fees for treatment and surgery and appealed to the concerned bodies to take urgent action in order to allow Bayan to retrieve her normal sight and pursue her studies.
A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye which leads to a decrease in vision. Cataracts often develop slowly and can affect one or both eyes. Symptoms may include faded colors, blurry or double vision, halos around light, trouble with bright lights, and trouble seeing at night. This may result in trouble driving, reading, or recognizing faces. Poor vision caused by cataracts may also result in an increased risk of falling and depression. Cataracts cause half of all cases of blindness and 33% of visual impairment worldwide.
