Statistics issued by AGPS on the occasion of Universal Children’s Day kept record of the death of 250 Palestinian refugee children in war-torn Syria, making up 6.27% of the overall death toll among the Palestinians of Syria.
The data pointed out that 128 children died under shelling; 15 were fatally shot by snipers; 11 were gunned down; two children were tortured to death; 22 drowned at sea; 25 others were killed in car blasts; and 34 died due to the blockade and medical neglect.
Another 12 children died of other causes, including burns, suffocation, run-over accidents, and abduction.
Sworn affidavits by ex-detainees also confirmed the presence of toddlers swung in their moms’ arms in Syrian prisons.
Thousands of children have gone orphaned after they lost one or both of their parents in the deadly warfare.
Several Palestinian children taking refuge in Lebanon and Turkey after they fled Syria dropped out of school as they sought out livelihoods to feed themselves and their starved families in light of the reluctance maintained by the UNRWA and the international community vis-à-vis their tragic state of affairs.
The warfare in Syria has also had traumatic fallouts on Palestinian refugee children in and outside Syria. Post-traumatic stress disorders, mental psychosis, sleeplessness and nightmares, eating disorders, and intense fear have all been among the symptoms with which Palestinian children have been diagnosed.
On the occasion of Children’s Universal Day, AGPS renews its calls to the international community, human rights institutions, UNICEF, UNRWA, and all concerned bodies to work on protecting Palestinian children in embattled Syria.
AGPS also appeals to Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, and Turkey to urgently step in and take immediate action so as to assuage the tragedy endured by Palestinian children who fled war-ragged Syria and provide them with physical and moral protection in the host countries.
