Palestinian Students Honored in Damascus

The General Authority for Palestinian Arab Refugees paid tribute to a number of Palestinian students in Damascus who garnered the highest scores at their academic institutions.

During a ceremony held on Thursday, speakers stressed the key role played by Palestinian students to promote and preserve Palestinian intellect, identity, and socio-historical legacy.

The devastating impact of the war in Syria has diminished the academic achievements of students at their schools as educational facilities had come under heavy shelling by the warring parties.

Dozens of schoolchildren were pronounced dead in government onslaughts on UN-run schools in Syria while several academic institutions have gone out of operation as a result of the deadly hostilities.

UNRWA figures have shown that 70% of all the Agency’s schools in Syria are inoperative. This is due to school buildings being destroyed, damaged, rendered inaccessible by fighting, or because they have been turned into shelters housing the displaced.
