Displaced families have received pledges by Damascus Governorate to return to Yarmouk Camp for Palestinian refugees in the near future.
The promises were made by member of Damascus statistics and planning committee Samir AlJazaerli.
AlJazaerli said the engineering company has set three ways to rehabilitate Yarmouk Camp: To refine main streets and reconstruct the most affected areas; or to reconstruct the most affected areas and keep the status quo in the old Yarmouk camp, in line with the 2004 chart amended in 2013. The third proposed solution is to have the 220-hectare area completely reconstructed before civilians are allowed to return to their homes on condition of proven property ownership.
He added that the displaced families will be allowed to return to their homes in the next few months, pending the reconstruction of uninhabitable homes, adding that contacts have been ongoing between local authorities and the General Authority for Palestinian Arab Refugees to that end.
Sometime earlier, Jazaerli said the old Yarmouk Camp has a legal specificity and is directly supervised by the General Authority for Palestinian Arab Refugees. Therefore, property ownership in the camp can only be proved by means of official documents, including a residence permit or a court order.
Given the above mentioned conditions, Law 10, which allows the Syrian government to designate zones for redevelopment, cannot be put into effect, he added.
Scores of stranded families fled Yarmouk camp following the 33-day military operation launched by the Syrian government forces on April 19, 2018. Dozens of civilians were killed and dozens more injured in the offensive. Over 60% of buildings in Yarmouk have gone either totally or partially destroyed in the warfare.
