Syrian security sources reported today the arrest of Amjad al-Youssef, the prime suspect in the Tadamon massacre, along with several individuals accused of involvement in serious human rights abuses that occurred in southern Damascus neighborhoods in previous years. A woman known as “Yasmina” (Um Ali) was also arrested.<\/p>\n
According to the source, the arrests took place at dawn today in a “high-profile” security operation, without disclosing further details regarding the circumstances of the arrests or the arresting agency.<\/p>\n
Conflicting information from local sources and testimonies from former residents of the Tadamon and Qadam neighborhoods indicates that some of those arrested are suspected of involvement in the arrest and kidnapping of civilians, including Palestinian refugees, during a period when armed groups affiliated with the security services controlled those areas.<\/p>\n
The testimonies also reported the use of locations within the neighborhoods, including the Nasreen Street area, as unofficial detention centers. It is believed that these centers witnessed abuses against detainees, including torture and ill-treatment, as well as instances of financial extortion against victims’ families in exchange for their release.<\/p>\n
The Action Group for Palestinians of Syria was unable to independently verify all the details, given the lack of sufficient official information regarding the investigation’s findings.<\/p>\n
In a related development, the source stated that the operation also resulted in the arrest of seven other individuals, including former officers and personnel, suspected of belonging to security formations during the previous regime.<\/p>\n
