On Wednesday, July 22, 2026, the Action Group for Palestinians of Syria participated in a panel discussion organized by the Association of Detainees and Missing Persons of Saydnaya Prison to discuss its new report, \u201cWhat if He Were Alive?\u201d The report addresses the humanitarian, psychological, and social impacts faced by the children of the missing and forcibly disappeared in Syria.<\/p>\n
The Action Group was represented at the session by its Damascus office director, Tawfiq Hujair, and the director of its correspondents team, Zahir Saleh, along with a number of survivors and relatives of the missing. They shared their testimonies regarding the ongoing repercussions of enforced disappearances on families, emphasizing the importance of uncovering the fate of the missing and holding those responsible for the violations accountable.<\/p>\n
*Yarmouk camp… the most cases of disappearance*<\/p>\n
During its intervention, the Action Group presented its latest documented data on missing Palestinians in Syria, noting that approximately 5,300 Palestinian refugees remain missing, including 5,177 men and 193 women.<\/p>\n
The Group explained that Yarmouk camp, south of Damascus, recorded the highest number of disappearances with 1,182 cases, followed by Khan al-Shih camp with 471 cases.<\/p>\n
The Group emphasized that Palestinian refugees were among the groups subjected to enforced disappearance during the years of the Syrian revolution, calling for the inclusion of Palestinian victims in national databases of missing persons and ensuring their case is addressed in transitional justice processes, as they are part of the victims of violations in Syria.<\/p>\n
The group indicated that the total number of Palestinian victims in Syria, including those killed and missing, exceeds 10,000, representing approximately 5.6% of the total Palestinian population in the country. It also stated that its database documents 7,294 cases of enforced disappearance, of which 560 have been released, while the deaths of 1,305 individuals, mostly under torture, have been confirmed.
