The Turkish coast guard detained a number of irregular migrants, including the Palestinian refugee from Syria Zakaria Abu Hamida, a resident of AlNeirab Camp, after their boat sank on Monday, June 17.
The migrants were caught onboard a Greece-bound ship off Turkey’s Badrum seashore. 12 migrants, including Zakari’s brother Ahmad, were pronounced dead.
On Tuesday, the Turkish authorities released the names of 16 migrants, among them Palestinian refugees, who were rescued in the operation and transferred to a detention center in Bodrum. Five people were arrested in the incident over allegations of migrant smuggling.
