The National Commission for Missing Persons in Syria discussed with the UK’s envoy to Syria, Anne Snow, ways to support efforts to uncover the fate of thousands of missing persons and enhance the humanitarian response provided to their families, during a meeting held at the Commission’s headquarters in Damascus.
According to what the commission reported, Safinaz Al-Shuaibi, a member of the National Commission for Missing Persons, reviewed the mechanisms of work followed in dealing with the file of missing persons, including communication with families, and providing psychological and legal support, within the framework of striving to ensure the right of the families of missing persons to know the fate of their relatives and to preserve their dignity.
The two sides also discussed the importance of strengthening international coordination and cooperation to support the Authority’s efforts, given the continued suffering of thousands of Syrian families, including Palestinian-Syrian families, who are still waiting for any information about the fate of their children who have been missing since the years of conflict.
The issue of missing persons and detainees is one of the most complex humanitarian issues in Syria, with local and international human rights demands continuing to reveal the fate of the missing, and to provide transparent mechanisms that ensure access to the truth and achieve justice for the victims’ families.
