Action Group – Lebanon
Beirut activists issued a strongly worded statement addressed to the Director of UNRWA in Lebanon, Dorothy Klaus, and the Director of the agency in Syria, Amanya Michael, demanding an urgent and clear plan for the return of Palestinian refugees from Lebanon to their camps in Syria.
The activists held the agency internationally and humanely responsible for failing to address the situation of thousands of Palestinian refugees from Syria currently residing in Lebanon.
The statement expressed pain and anger at the continued suffering of these refugees, who have been living in harsh conditions for years, due to the agency’s lack of a clear plan to rebuild the destroyed camps in Syria or ensure their safe and dignified return.
The activists held UNRWA responsible for what they described as “grave negligence,” calling for:
The development of an urgent plan to return the refugees to Syria in coordination with relevant international bodies.
The agency must fulfill its responsibilities in rebuilding the damaged camps.
The policy of procrastination, which is exacerbating the crisis, must cease.
Immediate support must be provided to refugees in Lebanon until a lasting solution to their plight is found.
The statement concluded by warning that the continuation of this situation could lead to an even greater humanitarian catastrophe, emphasizing that “the dignity of the refugee is not an option, and their right to return and live in dignity is not subject to postponement.”
