Lebanon: Warnings of a humanitarian crisis as UNRWA continues to suspend payments to Palestinian refugees from Syria

Lebanon – Action Group

A group of Palestinian activists from Syria in Lebanon issued an urgent statement holding the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) responsible for the dire deterioration in the living conditions of thousands of families, accusing it of silence and inaction.
The statement, a copy of which was obtained by the Action Group for Palestinians of Syria, asserted that the UN agency’s continued withholding of monthly financial assistance to this group of refugees, at a time when Lebanon is grappling with multiple crises, constitutes a blatant abdication of humanitarian responsibilities, leaving families to face poverty and hunger without any protection.
The activists pointed out that UNRWA’s repeated excuse, “There is no funding,” has become a mere unacceptable and insulting pretext for the dignity of refugees, emphasizing that this excuse is no longer acceptable in light of the daily suffering endured by sick children and families threatened with displacement.
The statement warned that thousands of families are living on the brink of a genuine humanitarian catastrophe. As many patients are unable to secure medication, and families struggle to pay rent, activists describe the situation as one that cannot tolerate further neglect or procrastination.
Amid these condemnations, activists issued an urgent appeal to the international community and donor countries to intervene immediately before a humanitarian catastrophe befalls the refugees. They also held UNRWA “fully morally and humanely responsible,” demanding the immediate disbursement of all outstanding payments and categorically rejecting the continued policy of procrastination under the guise of funding shortages.
The statement concluded by emphasizing that the dignity of refugees and their right to a decent life are not subject to negotiation, and that their rights constitute an international and legal obligation that must be respected. They warned that the lives of refugees could become victims of inaction under the pretext of “no funding.”
