Syrian-Palestinian families flee Shatila camp following Israeli warnings

Action Group – Syria

The Action Group for Palestinians of Syria has observed a significant displacement movement of families residing in the Shatila Palestinian refugee camp south of Beirut, including Palestinian refugees from Syria. This exodus follows warnings issued by the Israeli army to residents of several neighborhoods in the southern suburbs of Beirut, urging them to evacuate. The warnings come amid fears of a potential bombardment of the area.
The Action Group’s correspondent reported that the camp witnessed a large-scale movement of families in recent hours, particularly from the area adjacent to Ard Jaloul. Hundreds of families left, carrying what persona belongings they could salvage, using various means of transportation.
The influx of displaced people from the southern suburbs has caused severe traffic congestion on Beirut’s streets.
According to
information obtained by the Action Group, a number of displaced families, including Palestinian families from Syria residing in the camp, left without a clear destination. Some sought refuge in areas relatively farther from the camp, while others were forced to sleep on the streets or head to schools opened by the Lebanese authorities as temporary shelters in the Tariq al-Jdideh area. Some families went to northern Lebanon to stay with relatives, while others preferred to remain inside the camp due to the lack of alternatives or sufficient shelters.
This coincides with a large-scale displacement of people from Beirut’s southern suburbs, as well as the adjacent Burj al-Barajneh camp, where a number of Palestinian refugees have left their homes fearing an escalation of violence. This comes amid a shortage of available shelter.
Activists have called for the urgent provision of shelters for displaced families and for the delivery of humanitarian and logistical support, given that many are leaving with limited resources and the already dire humanitarian conditions for refugees. Among them are Palestinian refugees from Syria residing in Palestinian camps in Lebanon.
