Syria… Calls to open the files of the missing and expedite justice procedures

Damascus – Action Group

On Monday, families of the missing and forcibly disappeared in Syria renewed their appeal to official authorities, urging the General Authority for Missing Persons and the Ministry of Justice to take immediate action to open the files of the missing and reveal their fate, given the continued ambiguity surrounding this humanitarian issue for years.

In a statement received by local media, the families expressed their concern over the ongoing delay in addressing this matter, warning that ignoring it could negatively impact social stability, given the immense suffering endured by thousands of families who remain unaware of their loved ones’ whereabouts.

They pointed out that official bodies and international organizations had previously acknowledged the existence of files related to the missing, calling for their disclosure and the implementation of practical steps to close this file in accordance with standards of justice and transparency.

In a related context, families criticized the Ministry of Education and its directorates for failing to take clear measures regarding missing teachers, calling for the publication of official lists of their names to ensure the preservation of their moral rights and to honor their professional careers.

They also demanded practical measures to redress the harm done, including facilitating documentation processes by creating online platforms or links that allow families of the missing to register their information, thus contributing to organizing and expediting the processing of this file. The issue of missing and forcibly disappeared persons in Syria is one of the most prominent unresolved humanitarian issues, as thousands of families are still waiting to learn the fate of their loved ones, considering this a fundamental step towards achieving justice and fairness.
