Lebanon: Deportation of Syrian Palestinians to Syria raises humanitarian and legal concerns

Beirut – Action Group

A correspondent for the Action Group in Lebanon reported that a Syrian Palestinian family of five, who had been displaced from Yarmouk camp to Burj al-Barajneh camp in Beirut, and then forced to flee to Nahr al-Bared camp in northern Lebanon due to the ongoing war in Syria, were forcibly deported to Syria under illegal and inhumane conditions.

The correspondent stated that the family was stopped at the Deir Ammar checkpoint while returning to their home in Burj al-Barajneh camp after the ceasefire in Lebanon, where they were arrested and immediately deported to Syria.

Our correspondent added that another young Syrian Palestinian man was also deported from the same checkpoint, in an action deemed a violation of international law and humanitarian standards.

He confirmed that all those arrested had entered Lebanon legally. He stated that any alleged residency violations stemmed from the Lebanese General Security’s refusal to grant any settlements to Palestinian refugees from Syria, a policy that has negatively impacted the lives of displaced families.

The group’s is correspondent noted that the authorities’ treatment of the family and the young man was poor and violated international law and humanitarian standards, raising serious concerns about the situation of Palestinian refugees from Syria in Lebanon and necessitating action from relevant authorities to guarantee their rights and protect them from arbitrary practices.
