Action Group – Rural Damascus
On Saturday evening, Internal Security Forces conducted a large-scale security operation in the al-Husayniyah camp south of the Syrian capital, Damascus. The operation targeted individuals suspected of involvement in drug trafficking and distribution, and encompassed several neighborhoods and areas within the camp.
According to residents who spoke to the Action Group, the operation resulted in the arrest of a number of suspects, coinciding with a widespread security deployment and raids on locations suspected of being used for drug-related activities. Sources also reported the seizure of quantities of narcotics and sums of money, though no official statement has been released detailing the final tally or the identities of those arrested.
This operation comes amidst repeated complaints from camp residents regarding the growing prevalence of drug use in recent times and its social and security repercussions on the local community, particularly among young people.
Observers believe that continued efforts to curb drug use require, in addition to security measures, strengthening awareness and prevention programs and providing social support for youth. This would contribute to addressing the root causes of the phenomenon and mitigating its effects within and around Palestinian camps.
Official authorities have not yet released further details regarding the results of the operation or whether it will be expanded to include other areas in the Damascus countryside.
